Caina refers to Pieve Caina, a small Italian village in the Umbrian region. In a very personal fashion, the video of the village’s landscape is accompanied by Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s sonata for solo cello of 1960.
“m” examines the basic elements of video art: images and sound. They are handled here as two independent levels, each given equal treatment in the composition of the work, and each imbued with emotionally subjective moments, which reverberate in the viewer.
In the video “namen” (names), a sequence of intimate and tranquil images, the leitmotif – a close-up of trickling sand – is contrasted with a series of live recordings.
In a New York backyard the camera follows a “cycle” of water. One take shows water spraying from a balcony in a high arc and splitting into innumerable drops, in the other, condensation keeps on dripping down. The circular movement of the camera combines both streams of water.
